Imbolc - Cathance River

Imbolc is the Celtic celebration of the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox. The rings beneath the trees symbolize the return of the light, and of warmth, the new life of spring, the turning point as winter turns toward spring.(for more by Jim McCarthy on Imbolc see his photo-essay here!)

  1. Lichen’s Lament*

Hey you, sturdy shoe, denim blue,
Wood's walking, I’m talking to you.

    I’m a common green shield(1) wrapping a hemlock bower,
and so distinctive ID me at 40 miles per hour,

As easy to spot through the moss and frost hoary,
Are red-capped British soldiers(2) massed in glory,

    Among these mosses trumpets(3) flourish,
And white-starred mounds of reindeer(4) the caribou to nourish,

Look to the smooth-barked birches and aspens,
And see secret messages from script(5) and scribble(6) lichens,

    CREA’s granite host Cumberland(7) - and peppered-rock(8) shields,
O wonder of wonders what seeing versus looking often yields.
